Palm Pre: So Pretty. So Nice. So Not SERO Friendly.

I got my greedy little hands on a Palm Pre today at church. A colleague of mine has the Pre and he let me fool around with it for a while during Sunday School. My first thoughts were quite similar to Nathan’s first impressions when he posted about it a few days ago.

The Pre is small! I swear all of the promo pictures make the thing look pretty big and, well, ugly. Like at least as big as the Touch Pro, but this thing doesn’t even come close! My esteemed colleague, Nathan said it reminded him of a little Pebble – my thoughts exactly. Either a little pebble, or a rain drop. Whatever it looks like, it’s definitely a chunk of burning love.

After I got over the excitement of seeing this thing in real life, I figured I’d get down to business before the teacher began the lesson on compassion and other less important matters. ;) I navigated to the contacts, popped out the keyboard and naturally began typing in my contact information. After all, I should be the most important person in his contact book! Right off the bat I noticed that the keyboard was teeny tiny! I’d say that I have average size hands and fingers, and I must admit that it wasn’t super comfortable to type on. However, I couldn’t complain because moments before holding this rain drop in my hand, I was fumbling around the not-so-friendly onscreen keyboard on my device (the Diamond). So the small keyboard took some getting used to. But I would easily take the smaller physical keyboard on the Pre over the Diamond’s onscreen keyboard.

In the few minutes that I had the Pre, I noticed that it was really comfortable in the hand, and it had a rather intuitive, user-friendly interface. I only had the phone for a few minutes, but in the time I had it I managed to type my contact information into the phone, and I texted myself a message. Something I noticed immediately after I sent the message was that the messages were displayed in a really eye-friendly format. It kind of reminded me of iChat on a Mac. Just really smooth and nice to look at.

Take this for what it’s worth. I only had a few minutes with it, but those few minutes were enough to sell me on wanting one. Funny, because the night before, I had myself nearly talked out of lusting after the Pre after reading Shoemoney’s rant on how much he hates Sprint and the Pre. Unfortunately, Sprint isn’t allowing customers with SERO to activate the Pre. Shame, shame. But unless they end up allowing SERO customers jump on board, I’m going to have to pass the Pre by and wait patiently for the next SERO-friendly device – if they make one, that is.
